Why did QuickBooks Online stop working in Australia?
Intuit withdrew QuickBooks Online from the Australian market in 2022, ending support and local reseller access. Many AU businesses were left on an unsupported product or migrated to Reckon, the licensee that carried the QuickBooks brand for AU Desktop. Both situations create a clear case for moving to Xero, which is the dominant cloud accounting platform in Australia with deep ATO and STP2 integration.
Will we lose any history when we migrate from QuickBooks to Xero?
No. Full historical migration is standard for all projects we run — contacts, invoices, bills, payments, journals, attachments and audit trail. Your accountant retains comparison data for prior financial years. The only items that do not transfer directly are certain QuickBooks-specific report formats; we rebuild Xero equivalents during the parallel-run phase.
How do QuickBooks tax codes map to Xero GST rates?
QuickBooks uses tax codes like GST, FRE, N-T and INP; Xero uses named tax rates (GST on Income, GST Free Income, BAS Excluded, GST on Expenses). We map every code before the migration runs, review the mapping with your bookkeeper or BAS agent, and test it against a sample of real transactions in the sandbox before any data moves to production.
What about payroll if we are mid-financial-year?
Mid-year payroll migration is the most sensitive part of any QuickBooks-to-Xero project and the first thing we plan around. The cleanest cutover dates are start-of-quarter or 1 July. If a mid-year cutover is unavoidable, we run Xero Payroll and final QuickBooks pays in parallel for a short period, with proper YTD bring-over so STP2 filings to the ATO remain accurate and complete.
Can you migrate QuickBooks Desktop or Reckon to Xero?
Yes. Desktop and Reckon migrations follow the same structured project — pre-cutover audit, sandbox build, parallel-run, cutover. The main difference is that Desktop data must be exported from the local file before it can be staged in Xero; we guide you through that process cleanly. Reckon Accounts Hosted and Reckon One are also handled.
How do you handle a multi-entity or US-parent QuickBooks setup?
Multi-entity setups (multiple QuickBooks company files, intercompany trading, or a US parent still on QBO) are a common pattern for us. Each company file maps to its own Xero organisation. We model the intercompany relationships at the start so consolidated reporting still works after cutover, and we help the US parent team understand what changes for the AU subsidiary.
What if something goes wrong during the migration?
QuickBooks stays as your live system throughout the entire migration. The parallel-run phase means both systems are reconciling the same transactions for at least a week before cutover. If the figures do not line up, we stop the cutover and fix it in the sandbox — QuickBooks is still live, no rollback is needed. Blind cutover risk is zero by design.
What Xero integrations can you set up after the migration?
Any integration the Xero ecosystem supports, plus custom API builds where the off-the-shelf connector falls short. Common post-migration integrations include bank feeds, Shopify, Stripe, HubSpot, Deputy, ServiceM8, Simpro and Power BI. We scope these alongside the migration so they are live on cutover day rather than as a separate project.
