An AI-powered recruitment tool trained on your company's past hiring decisions might systematically disadvantage certain candidates without anyone realising.
Data privacy and consent. Many AI tools process customer data in ways that aren't immediately obvious. That helpful chatbot might be sending conversation data overseas for processing. That analytics tool might be feeding your customer information into a broader training dataset. Do your customers know? Did they consent?
Hallucinations and misinformation. Large language models confidently generate incorrect information. If you're using AI to produce customer-facing content, draft legal responses, or provide product advice, inaccurate outputs can damage trust and create liability.
Vendor lock-in and dependency. Building your operations around a specific AI provider's tools creates dependency. What happens if they change their pricing, terms, or capabilities? What if they're acquired? Having a plan B isn't paranoia - it's risk management.
Practical Steps for Your Business
1. Know What AI You're Actually Using
This sounds obvious, but most businesses can't list all the AI tools in their stack. AI is baked into email platforms, CRMs, accounting software, and customer support tools. Start by auditing what's already there. You can't manage risks you don't know about.
2. Understand Where Your Data Goes
For every AI tool, ask: What data does it access? Where is that data processed and stored? Is it used to train broader models? Can you opt out? These aren't paranoid questions - they're basic due diligence, especially under the Privacy Act.
Australian businesses should pay particular attention to data sovereignty. If customer data is being processed by servers overseas, you need to understand the implications and ensure your privacy policy reflects reality.

Not all AI providers are equal when it comes to ethics and transparency. When evaluating vendors, ask:
- Where is data processed and stored? Do they use Australian or Asia-Pacific data centres?
- Is customer data used to train their models? Can you opt out?
- What safety guardrails are built into their systems?

- What's their track record on transparency and incident response?
